In-Person Branding and Presentation

As we’ve noted, your brand isn’t just about what you say and how you act; it’s about how you represent yourself physically, too. After all, personal branding is a blend of everything that makes you who you are. Though your brand is comprised of many intangible traits, we don’t want to lie to you: Your physical appearance does matter. Naturally, it’s almost always the first thing that people notice about you. Your personal and professional goals, attitudes, and preferences, and how you choose to present yourself all combine to form your brand.

Choosing clothing consistent with your brand will often help sell your story, and projecting the image of success (even before you’re fully able to attain it) can give you a confidence boost that will make it easier for you to achieve your goals. The popular TLC reality show What Not to Wear was a great resource for those interested in thinking about their physical presentation. Hosts Stacy London and Clinton Kelly might not have considered themselves personal branding experts, per se, but they helped participants express the qualities they were looking to embody simply by updating their wardrobes.

Stacy and Clinton began each episode by interviewing participants to get a sense of their hobbies, lifestyle, and personal preferences. For example: Were they creative? Were they active or sedentary? Were they parents? What type of career were they in? The hosts then spoke to the participant’s friend and family to get their perspective. This is similar to the process we’re advocating for in this book. We’ve already started by asking you to define your brand, and in Chapter 13 we’ll give you advice for requesting feedback from friends and colleagues.

In every episode, the big makeover reveal was a truly satisfying moment for both the viewers and the participants. Not only that, but the participants started feeling better as well. It’s clear they felt more confident, which led to an improvement in overall happiness and usually greater success in turn. You might not have the benefit of a reality show, but you can still take your physical presentation more seriously and take pride in it.
